The age of generative artificial intelligence assistants has arrived, and they are becoming capable of performing more complex tasks every day. Some appear relatively simple, such as the recently released Yelp (YELP) Assistant that helps consumers find and connect with service professionals. Other AI assistants are a bit more industrious, such as Siemens (OTCPK:SIEGY) Industrial Copilot, which is slated for release this summer. Enriched by the large language models in Microsoft (MSFT) Azure OpenAI, this gen AI assistant can help engineers create code for factory automation. Meta Platforms (META) and Google (GOOG) (GOOGL) continue to push the boundaries with voice AI assistants. And last week, Amazon Web Services (NASDAQ:AMZN) made its gen AI chatbot, Amazon Q, fully available to developers. Q is powered by LLMs and other foundation models, available through Amazon Bedrock. It might be the most capable assistant for accelerating software development. Doug Seven, director of AI developer experiences at AWS, leads the development of generative AI tools, including Amazon Q Developer. "So we introduced this idea of Amazon Q Developer, where you could ask Q to go do something," Seven said in an interview with Seeking Alpha. "Q will confirm with you what it is you're asking in the form of creating a plan, confirm that Q has the plan correct, and then go off and do that work." Q will work behind the scenes, making changes to code or implementing new code, and all the while present those back to the developer to confirm the code changes or additions are correct. Seven said a team of engineers at AWS used Q's developer agents to implement 1,000 Java application upgrades in two days. "And that's incredible in the sense that if you've ever had to be involved in a Java application upgrade, one Java application upgrade can often take much, much longer than two days," he added. "So to do 1,000 of them in two days is really remarkable." Amazon Q could possibly improve coding productivity by 80% or more. And aside from software development, Q can also perform business tasks such as tracking sales data or analyzing enterprise data at a much faster rate than an individual could perform. The applications seem limitless, such as assisting in onboarding plans or providing customer service. The key lies in assisting employees in repetitive or even complex tasks without disrupting work flow. "Throughout the history of technology, we have these points of innovation that change the landscape of technology for the future," Seven said. "I believe that what is happening with generative AI now is one of those, where we have this convergence of compute capability that is affordable enough to do things at the scale that generative AI requires." "AI might not solve every problem," he added. "But we're going to find unique and creative and meaningful ways to use AI in our day-to-day workflow, and we won't go back."
