Microsoft's partnership with French artificial intelligence startup Mistral AI does not qualify for an investigation, the U.K.'s antitrust agency said on Friday. The Competition and Markets Authority said in a release that the deal did not need an investigation, citing the merger provisions of the 2002 Enterprise Act. The CMA had launched in inquiry into the deal in April to see if it merited an investigation. Microsoft shares were fractionally higher in premarket trading. The European Commission, the EU's anti-competition agency, is still analyzing the deal, however. Paris-based Mistral said in February that it would bring its open and commercial models to Microsoft's Azure cloud computing platform, its first distribution partner. The company's latest language model called Mistral Large — which can be used for multilingual reasoning tasks, including text understanding, transformation, and code generation — is available through Azure AI Studio and Azure Machine Learning. Microsoft also took a minority stake in Mistral in February, though financial details have not been disclosed. Microsoft invested multiple billions of dollars into Mistral competitor OpenAI at the start of last year amid the artificial intelligence boom. That deal has attracted scrutiny on both sides of the Atlantic Ocean.
