Art Blocks, a prominent platform for on-chain artwork, recently achieved a significant milestone. The vast majority of its projects, around 90%, can now be accessed solely through the Ethereum blockchain. This marks a departure from the previous reliance on a company-provided back-end generator for online viewing, representing a major leap forward in the accessibility and preservation of digital art.
Despite continuing to use a centralized generator for online visualization, this achievement aligns with Art Blocks' mission to establish infrastructure for a new era in art history. The company announced on its fourth anniversary that enabling full on-chain accessibility for its works is crucial to its long-term mission of creating infrastructure for "a new chapter in art history."
This development allows artworks to be viewable online as long as the Ethereum blockchain exists, regardless of Art Blocks' continued operation or hosting of those works. Approximately 90% of Art Blocks pieces, initially created with programming tools like p5js and threejs, can now be viewed purely on-chain, while the remaining 10% still require third-party assistance for online viewing.
In a blog post, company founder Erick Calderon called this achievement a "fundamental shift in how art can be created, collected, and preserved." He emphasized that individuals are no longer dependent on Art Blocks or any other platform for accessing these works.
