Canada’s largest private sector union has filed an application with the British Columbia Labor Relations Board (BCLRB) to enable Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN) employees at facilities in Metro Vancouver to form a union. “Workers at Amazon are seeking job security, health and safety, and fair wages,” said Unifor National President Lana Payne. Once the BCLRB processes the application, a vote to unionize can be held providing Unifor has obtained cards submitted by at least 45% of the eligible workforce. If the 55% threshold is reached, union certification is granted and work begins on a collective agreement. Efforts to unionize Amazon (AMZN) warehouses in Canada began in mid-2023 when Unifor began campaigning at an Amazon (AMZN) facility in New Westminster with the help from U.S. labor organizer, Chris Smalls. Smalls created the Amazon Labor Union, or ALU, which was successful in organizing the JFK8 warehouse in Staten Island. The JFK8 warehouse, however, remains Amazon’s (AMZN) only unionized facility in the U.S.
