The National Transportation Safety Board is investigating a fatal crash involving a Ford (NYSE:F) Mustang Mach-E SUV, equipped with Ford’s BlueCruise hand-free driving system, and two stationary cars on I-95 in Philadelphia. According to the NTSB report, on March 3, 2024, a Hyundai Elantra and Toyota Prius were struck from behind by the Mustang SUV. According to Reuters, Ford (F) was made aware of the incident on Wednesday and informed the NTSB as required. Although it is uncertain if BlueCruise was responsible for the crash, any accident involving autonomous driving must be reported to the NTSB. The agency has examined more than 900 crashes in which autonomous driving was in use. As recently as Tuesday, Tesla (TSLA) settled a lawsuit over a 2018 car crash that killed an Apple (AAPL) engineer after the self-driving system on his Model X allegedly steered the vehicle into a highway barrier.
