The U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency has reported that Russia-backed hackers utilized their access to Microsoft's email system to steal correspondence between officials and the company. The agency's April 2 directive warned that hackers were using information initially acquired from corporate email systems to obtain additional access to Microsoft customer systems, as per a report from Reuters. Previously, the agency had revealed that a Russian state-sponsored cyber actor known as Midnight Blizzard had exfiltrated email correspondence between Federal Civilian Executive Branch agencies and Microsoft through a compromise of the tech giant's corporate email accounts. Microsoft disclosed the incident in January. Microsoft stated that the hackers significantly increased the volume of certain aspects of the campaign, such as password sprays, by as much as 10-fold in February compared to January. Both Microsoft and CISA have notified all federal agencies whose email correspondence with Microsoft was compromised. Last week, the U.S. Cyber Safety Review Board described a targeted Chinese hack of top government officials' emails in 2023 as "preventable," attributing blame to Microsoft for its cybersecurity lapses and lack of transparency, according to a report from Reuters.
