State Street Global Advisors SPDR's Sector & Equity Compass Report for Q2 highlights the resilience of U.S. equities. The S&P 500 (SP500) rallied 10% in Q1 and is up 4.7% year-to-date. The S&P 400 (SP400) also saw a 10% rally in Q1 and is up 1.85% year-to-date. In contrast, the Russell 2000 (IWM) was up 5% in Q1 but is down 3.97% year-to-date. Analysts noted a material upgrade in forecasted 2024 GDP growth for the U.S. from 1.2% to 2.2% by the end of March. U.S. PMI numbers continue to outpace European equities, indicating an economic divergence that persists. Yearly productivity growth in the U.S. reached 2.6% in Q4 2023, while in Europe it was -1.2%. Regarding inflation, analysts do not expect a sustained rebound in U.S. CPI despite hotter-than-expected readings in the first two months. U.S. equity earnings were more resilient than anticipated, with large caps and mid-caps surpassing earnings estimates by 7% and 8% respectively in Q4 2023. The report emphasizes U.S. exceptionalism as a solid foundation for future earnings growth, attributing it to the strength of the U.S. economy. While U.S. large caps are at elevated valuations (P/E at 21.24), the analysts believe that the long-term tailwinds justify this premium, retaining a preference for the S&P 500 Index (SP500) over European large caps. Investors skeptical of high valuations in large caps are advised to consider the S&P Mid Cap 400 Index (SP400) and the Russell 2000 Index (IWM) as direct links to exposure to U.S. economic exceptionalism, with both indices generating over 75% of revenues within the U.S.
