TESLA Q1 EARNINGS REPORT SUMMARY Tesla (NASDAQ:TSLA) reported revenue fell 8.5% year-over-year in Q1 to $21.30B. The revenue tally missed the consensus estimate of $22.26B. EPS came in at $0.45 vs. $0.50 consensus and $0.85 year ago. The EPS tally from the electric vehicle maker was the lowest in ten quarters. Operating margin was reported at 5.5% of sales, to fall dramatically from last quarter's mark of 8.2%. Total GAAP gross margin was 17.4% vs. 19.3% a year ago, 17.6% in the prior quarter, and the consensus estimate of 16.5%. Adjusted EBITDA was $3.38B vs. $4.27B a year ago. For the quarter, the EV juggernaut's adjusted EBITDA margin fell to 15.9% of sales from 18.3% a year ago. Tesla (TSLA) delivered 386,810 vehicles in Q1 and produced 433,371 vehicles. By comparison, Tesla delivered a total of 484,507 vehicles in Q4 and delivered 422,875 a year ago in Q1. Looking ahead, Tesla (TSLA) said deliveries growth will be lower in 2023, but the new wave of growth is expected to be sparked by a launch of autonomous vehicles. Back in 2022, Tesla (TSLA) said it expected to achieve 50% average annual growth in vehicle deliveries over a multi-year timeline. Tesla (TSLA) said energy storage deployments increased sequentially in Q1 to a record 4.1 GWh. Business update: Tesla (TSLA) said it experienced numerous challenges in Q1, from the Red Sea conflict and the arson attack at Gigafactory Berlin, to the gradual ramp of the updated Model 3 in Fremont. Excluding Cybertruck and unscheduled downtime, TSLA said its COGS per unit declined sequentially in Q1, driven primarily by lower raw material costs. The company is still are in future growth, including AI infrastructure, production capacity, Supercharger and service networks, and new products' infrastructure. Of note, Tesla (TSLA) said it has updated its future vehicle line-up to accelerate the launch of new models ahead of previously communicated start of production in the second half of 2025. There was also a hint on strategy. "The future is not only electric, but also autonomous. We believe scaled autonomy is only possible with data from millions of vehicles and an immense AI training cluster. We have, and continue to expand, both," noted TSLA. Balance sheet update: Tesla (TSLA) ended the quarter with a cash position of $26.86B, despite negative cash flow. Shares of Tesla (TSLA) rallied 6.29% in after-hours trading to $144.61 after shedding 15% in the two weeks building up to earnings day. The 52-week high for Tesla is $299.29 and shares hit a low of $138.80 on Monday. The TSLA conference call is scheduled for 5:00 p.m. ET and could feature details on the robotaxi business and the pricing vs. demand outlook.
