Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN) and Google's (NASDAQ:GOOG) (NASDAQ:GOOGL) YouTube are vying for a new streaming package from the National Basketball Association, the Wall Street Journal reported, citing people familiar with the discussions. Discussions are ongoing for the NBA's next round of media packages, which will be effective after the 2024-2025 season. Announcing all the deals could take several weeks, and competition is heating up. Amazon's (AMZN) Prime Video is reportedly viewed by NBA and media executives as the front-runner, although YouTube is still in the mix. Meanwhile, Comcast's (CMCSA) NBCUniversal has set its sights on a major TV deal currently held by Disney's (DIS) ESPN and Warner Bros. Discovery's (WBD) TNT. Disney (DIS), which pays about $1.6B a year for TV rights, and Warner (WBD), which pays around $1.2B a year, carry around 165 games combined under their current deal. For the new pact, both companies have pitched paying much more while airing fewer games. An exclusive negotiating window for Disney (DIS) and Warner (WBD) to renew their contracts has expired, allowing NBA to negotiate with other suitors. NBCUniversal is in talks with NBA to air regular-season and playoff games on NBC and its streaming platform Peacock. It is also seeking rights for NBC to share the NBA Finals with Disney's (DIS) ABC, according to the report.
