Ravikash Bakolia, SA News Editor Advocacy group NOYB has filed a complaint with the Austrian Data Protection Authority against OpenAI for allegedly not fixing incorrect information provided by ChatGPT which may violate EU privacy rules. NOYB, or None Of Your Business, said the complainant, who is a public figure, in its case against OpenAI asked ChatGPT about his birthday, and was repeatedly provided incorrect information instead of telling users that it does not have the necessary data. The advocacy group added that OpenAI refused the complainant's request to rectify or erase the data, saying that it was not possible to correct data. Although the General Data Protection Regulation, or GDPR, gives users the right to ask companies for a copy of all personal data that is processed about them, OpenAI failed to disclose any information about the data processed, its sources or recipients, NOYB noted. The group has asked the Austrian data protection authority (DSB) to investigate OpenAI's data processing and the measures taken to ensure the accuracy of personal data processed in the context of the company's large language models. "It's clear that companies are currently unable to make chatbots like ChatGPT comply with EU law, when processing data about individuals. If a system cannot produce accurate and transparent results, it cannot be used to generate data about individuals," said Maartje de Graaf, data protection lawyer at NOYB. NOYB said that OpenAI notes that factual accuracy in large language models remains an area of active research. Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT)-backed OpenAI launched ChatGPT in November 2022 and since then generative AI services have taken the world by storm. Globally, companies have launched their own large language models, or LLMs which can provide services such as content, image, video and voice generation, to name a few.
