The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has initiated a preliminary investigation into Ford Motor Company's hands-free driving technology, BlueCruise, following two incidents involving Mustang Mach-E cars colliding with stationary vehicles during nighttime lighting conditions, resulting in at least one fatality. The NHTSA's Office of Defects Investigation will assess the BlueCruise system's performance on the dynamic driving task and driver monitoring. Ford Motor has not issued a statement on the investigation. Additionally, the NHTSA has opened an investigation into whether Tesla's recall of over 2 million vehicles to install new Autopilot safeguards is adequate. The recall investigation covers Model Y, X, S, 3, and Cybertruck vehicles in the U.S. equipped with Autopilot produced between the 2012 to 2024 model years. The NHTSA launched the investigation after identifying concerns due to crash events after vehicles had the recall software update installed, as well as results from preliminary NHTSA tests of remedied vehicles. In premarket trading on Monday, Ford Motor's shares were up 0.39%.
