Brookfield Asset Management (BAM) (NYSE:BEP) announced a plan to develop over 10.5 GW of new renewable energy capacity for Microsoft (MSFT), which is nearly 8 times larger than the largest single corporate power purchase agreement ever signed. The five-year "first of its kind global framework agreement" will commence in 2026 in the U.S. and Europe and is aimed at accelerating the expansion of renewable energy capacity to support Microsoft's sustainability goals. This partnership also holds the potential to deliver additional renewable capacity to the U.S., Europe, Asia-Pacific, India, and Latin America. While financial terms were not disclosed, The Financial Times estimated that the 10.5 GW of new capacity, sufficient to power approximately 1.8 million homes, would cost more than $10 billion based on recent industry trends. This initiative comes amidst rising concerns about the energy demand and associated carbon emissions of generative artificial intelligence.
