Vansh Agarwal, SA News Editor Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) is scheduled to report second-quarter earnings on Thursday, May 2nd, after market close. Analysts expect earnings per share of $1.51 on revenues of $90.61 billion, which would mark a decline of 4.5% year-over-year, its largest decline since the first-quarter of 2023. Shares of the iPhone-maker have underperformed the broader S&P 500 Index so far this year, slumping over 11%. Apple (AAPL) has been the second-weakest performer within the "Magnificent 7" group of technology and growth stocks, trailing behind only Tesla (TSLA). Investors will be focusing on the company's strategy to bring generative AI to its iPhones and boost falling sales in the Chinese market. The Cupertino giant slipped to the third spot in China's smartphone market in the first quarter, losing ground to local rivals Honor and Huawei Technologies. Apple (AAPL) also lost the top spot to Samsung (OTCPK:SSNLF) in the global smartphone market. Earlier in the year, Microsoft (MSFT) overtook Apple (AAPL) as the world's most valuable publicly traded company. While Microsoft (MSFT), Alphabet (GOOG) (GOOGL), and Meta (META) have hyped up their AI potential, the Tim Cook led company has remained largely muted on its AI plans. Apple (AAPL) is reportedly in talks with OpenAI to integrate the startup's generative AI capabilities into the next iPhone model, expected later this year. "We believe prevailing weakness in China is more cyclical than structural, and note that historically Appleās China business has exhibited much higher volatility than Apple overall," said investment firm Bernstein. The brokerage believes that generative AI features and tailwinds from the replacement cycle could set up Apple well for a strong iPhone 16 cycle. Seeking Alpha analysts at large consider AAPL a Hold. This compares with average Wall Street rating of Buy and SA Quant rating of Hold.
