On Wednesday, Daimler Truck Holding AG (OTCPK:DTRUY) unveiled its first autonomous truck demonstrator. The new truck is based on the North American production model of the battery-electric Freightliner eCascadia and is equipped with autonomous driving software from Torc Robotics as well as the latest sensor and computer technology, allowing it to drive autonomously in accordance with SAE Level 4 at a later date. Torc Robotics is Daimler Truck's independent autonomous driving technology subsidiary. While the autonomous truck is considered a research and pre-development project, Daimler Truck stated that it demonstrates the potential to develop autonomous technology into a modular, scalable platform independent of drive technology. The company's goal is to offer customers a broader selection of vehicles for autonomous driving in the future and is also working with Waymo (GOOG) on autonomous systems, aiming to launch autonomous trucks in the Southwest part of the U.S. as part of a middle-mile freight hauling service in 2027. Tesla (TSLA) and GM's (GM) Cruise are also working on autonomous driving fleets, despite concerns from regulators. Daimler Truck North America CEO John O'Leary stated, "By combining zero-emission and autonomous technologies in one product, we are testing solutions to potential future challenges for our customers. We want to give them options that enable them to keep the world moving today and into the future." Shares of Daimler (OTCPK:DTRUY) are up more than 20% over the last three months.
