Ravikash Bakolia, SA News Editor Mistral AI is nearing a financing round which would value the French startup at about $6B, almost tripling its level from six months ago, The Wall Street Journal reported. Existing investors General Catalyst and Lightspeed Venture Partners are anticipated to be the largest funders in the new financing round, in which Mistral is expected to raise about $600M, the report added, citing people with knowledge of the matter. In February, Mistral announced its collaboration with Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT) to bring its open and commercial models to Microsoft's Azure cloud computing platform, its first distribution partner. Reportedly, the U.S. tech giant was also taking a minor stake in the Paris-based company. Microsoft has already invested billions of dollars in OpenAI, the creator of large language models, or LLMs, such as GPT-4 and GPT 3.5. Mistral had said in February that its AI model Mistral Large achieved strong results on commonly used benchmarks, making it the world's second-ranked model generally available through an API, next to OpenAI's GPT-4. Mistral was founded a year ago by local researchers for Alphabet's (GOOG) (GOOGL) unit Google and Meta Platforms (META), and was valued more than $2B in December, which was a more than seven times the valuation it had the previous summer, the report noted. Mistral's CEO Arthur Mensch said his company aims to outflank Silicon Valley companies such as OpenAI and Google in the AI race by developing and selling lower-cost AI tools for businesses which can perform almost as good as OpenAI's ChatGPT, the report added. As of December, Mistral had raised over $500M from investors, while also pledging to sell minor stakes to companies involved in AI, including Nvidia (NVDA), Microsoft and Salesforce (CRM). Some Mistral models are also available on the cloud platforms run by Google and Amazon.
