Neuralink, owned by Elon Musk, revealed that its brain-computer implant (BCI) experienced malfunctions weeks after a 29-year-old accident victim, Noland Arbaugh, received the device as part of an FDA-authorized study early this year. The PRIME trial aims to assess the BCI's performance, with the goal of enabling patients with neurological conditions to control external devices such as computers using their thoughts. Arbaugh, the first recipient of the device, encountered issues as several threads came out of his brain implant weeks after the surgery, leading to a reduction in bits per second, a standard measure of the device's speed and accuracy. Neuralink took corrective measures, including modifying the recording algorithm, which reportedly improved BPS. In March, Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla (NASDAQ:TSLA) and SpaceX (SPACE), commended Arbaugh after the paralyzed individual utilized the device to post on his X platform for the first time, following a 2016 driving accident that left him paralyzed from the shoulders down.
