OpenAI co-founder and chief scientist Ilya Sutskever is leaving the company after almost a decade, and will be replaced by research director Jakub Pachocki. "I'm confident that OpenAI will build AGI that is both safe and beneficial under the leadership of Sam Altman, Greg Brockman, Mira Murati, and now, under the research leadership of Pachocki," Sutskever said on social media platform X. "I am excited for what comes next - a project that is very personally meaningful to me about which I will share details in due time." "This is very sad to me; Ilya is easily one of the greatest minds of our generation, a guiding light of our field," said Altman, adding that Pachocki "has run many of our most important projects, and I am confident he will lead us to make rapid and safe progress towards our mission of ensuring that AGI benefits everyone." Jan Leike, who co-led OpenAI's Superalignment program with Sutskever, has also left the startup. To note, the Superalignment team is working on ensuring that superintelligence - a hypothetical future AI system that's vastly smarter than humans - follows human intent. The exits come a day after OpenAI unveiled a new AI model GPT-4o and two months after Altman returned to Microsoft (MSFT)-backed OpenAI after his dramatic ouster.
