Neuralink’s disclosure about tiny threads coming out of the brain-computer implant (BCI) used in the first human patient is an issue that the Elon Musk-owned company has known about for years, Reuters reported Wednesday, citing five sources familiar with the matter. Three sources said that even animal trials conducted ahead of the clinical trial indicated that the wires might pull out, removing the electrodes used to decode the patient’s brain signals. However, according to the sources, Neuralink decided that the risk was not high enough to warrant a redesign. The sources opted to remain anonymous due to confidentiality agreements they had signed with Neuralink. The company or its executives refused to comment. The tech start-up backed by Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla (NASDAQ:TSLA) and SpaceX (SPACE), disclosed last week that Noland Arbaugh, the first patient to participate in the device’s human testing, had several threads come out of his brain implant weeks after the surgery. The trial, named PRIME, is designed to evaluate the performance of BCI, which Neuralink hopes will one day help patients with neurological conditions like Arbaugh control external devices such as computers only with their thoughts. While the issue affected BCI’s performance, the company took corrective measures, including tweaks to the device’s recording algorithm, which it said ‘superseded’ Noland’s initial performance.
