Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT) announced its plan to offer its cloud computing customers a platform of Advanced Micro Devices' (NASDAQ:AMD) AI chips, competing with Nvidia's (NASDAQ:NVDA) parts, as reported by Reuters. This will be detailed at Microsoft's Build developer conference next week, where the company will also unveil a preview of new Cobalt 100 custom processors. Microsoft will sell clusters of AMD's flagship MI300X AI chips through its Azure cloud service, providing an alternative to Nvidia's H100 line of GPUs, which currently dominate the data center chip market for AI. AMD anticipates about $4B in AI chip revenue in 2024, noting that the chips are powerful for training and running large AI models. Microsoft's cloud computing business also offers access to its self-made AI chips called Maia. The company's planned Cobalt 100 processors are expected to provide 40% better performance compared to other processors based on Arm's (ARM) technology, and are being used by Snowflake (SNOW) and others. The Cobalt chips, announced in November, are being evaluated to power Microsoft's messaging service Teams, and will also compete with Amazon.com's (AMZN) self-made Graviton CPUs, as per the report.
