India is preparing to develop its own generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) model, responding to the US-China rivalry in the AI sector.

This move aims to position India as a global AI leader, focusing on linguistic and cultural diversity. India's AI ambitions include hosting DeepSeek on Indian servers, significant investments in the IndiaAI Mission, and plans for domestic chip and GPU manufacturing.

India's Union IT Minister, Ashwini Vaishnaw, announced the creation of the GenAI model at the Utkarsh Odisha Conclave. Supported by the India AI Compute Facility, the project will utilize over 18,000 graphics processing units (GPUs) to build a large language model (LLM) tailored to the country's specific needs.

The government has selected 18 proposals to receive support for developing AI applications, covering 40% of the computing costs. India aims to create foundational AI models to compete with global leaders, with plans for chip and GPU manufacturing and a centralized computing resource.

China's DeepSeek AI startup has shaken the global tech stocks, prompting strategic responses from industry players. Its breakthroughs have caused a decline in global tech stocks, including a significant drop in Nvidia's market value. In response, India plans to host DeepSeek on its servers, addressing privacy concerns.

India's investment in AI infrastructure and semiconductor ambitions reflect its commitment to AI development, with plans to manufacture its own chips and explore the possibility of producing its GPUs in the next three to five years.
