India’s Department of Posts has initiated the nationwide Digital Address Code project to establish a standardized, geo-coded digital addressing system designed to enhance postal and public service efficiency across the country. In collaboration with the Foundation for Science Innovation and Development at the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), this initiative aims to build a secure, scalable digital public infrastructure aligned with India’s expanding digital economy and governance requirements. The Digital Address system will serve as a core platform integrating governmental, business, and citizen services, improving emergency response capabilities, fostering financial inclusion, and supporting urban planning efforts.Further boosting regional connectivity, India Post has formed a strategic partnership with Amazon to improve e-commerce delivery services throughout the Northeast Region.Additionally, the Department is implementing DIGIPIN, an automated, grid-based national addressing system using Geographic Information System (GIS) data, through collaborations with the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) and the National Institute of Urban Affairs. On the international front, India hosted the Indo-Africa Postal Leaders Meet to strengthen postal cooperation, financial inclusion, and capacity building under South-South cooperation principles. The Department also signed a bilateral agreement with Thailand Post to launch a tracked packet service that will drive cross-border e-commerce exports between the two nations.Under the Dak Ghar Niryat Kendra initiative, India Post has enrolled over 3,400 rural exporters, granting them access to markets, documentation assistance, and paperless customs clearances to empower small-scale and micro-entrepreneurs.Globally, postal services are embracing advanced technologies like blockchain and artificial intelligence (AI) to enhance operational efficiency and logistics, reflecting a broader trend towards modernization in this vital sector.
