India and Italy have formalized a significant scientific cooperation through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) targeting advancements in artificial intelligence (AI), quantum computing, biotechnology, and clean energy development under the 2025–2027 Executive Programme for Science and Technology Cooperation.

The partnership aims to boost joint research initiatives, facilitate mobility among scientists, and promote knowledge exchange between institutions from both countries. It extends the groundwork laid during the G20 Summit with the adoption of a Joint Strategic Action Plan focused on innovation, Industry 4.0, startups, and sustainable agricultural technologies.

During a high-level meeting involving Italy’s Minister of University and Research, Anna Maria Bernini, and India’s Minister of State for Science and Technology, Jitendra Singh, the nations reiterated their commitment to tackling global challenges. This includes cooperation on infectious diseases, green hydrogen, renewable energy, cultural heritage preservation, and sustainable marine resource management.

Highlighting India’s rapid progress in technology domains such as big data analytics, high-performance computing, and biotech, the discussions underscored India’s growing startup ecosystem and initiatives like the Aroma Mission and digital agriculture solutions. The Traditional Knowledge Digital Library was praised as an exemplary fusion of heritage and cutting-edge digital protection.

The MoU also entails incentives to enhance collaboration via joint projects, shared scientific infrastructure, and increased researcher mobility, reflecting a robust and long-term commitment to bilateral scientific and technological partnership.
