The US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) will hold its fifth crypto roundtable titled “DeFi and the American Spirit” on June 9 in Washington, D.C., focusing on decentralized finance (DeFi) regulation. Organized by the SEC’s Crypto Task Force, the event will feature opening remarks from Chair Paul Atkins and Commissioner Hester Peirce, followed by a moderated panel discussion led by former SEC Commissioner Troy Paredes. The roundtable aims to explore how DeFi platforms align with American values such as autonomy, open participation, and market-driven innovation, while addressing regulatory challenges regarding smart contracts, decentralized governance, and peer-to-peer protocols. Scheduled for roughly four hours, the event is part of the SEC’s broader “Spring Sprint Toward Crypto Clarity” initiative, which began in March 2025 to enhance regulatory policies for digital assets. The series has previously covered key crypto topics like securities classifications, crypto trading platforms, asset custody, and tokenization of traditional instruments. “DeFi and the American Spirit” will bring together experts from academia, legal fields, and the blockchain industry to discuss whether DeFi can be integrated into the US regulatory framework without compromising its principles of openness and investor protection. The roundtable is open to the public and will be live-streamed; virtual attendance requires no registration, but in-person participants must register in advance. This session is expected to be one of the most pivotal yet in shaping the future of DeFi regulation and balancing innovation with investor safeguards.
