Polygon PoS is advancing its network capability by upgrading its Heimdall consensus client to version 2 on the Amoy Testnet. This upgrade significantly enhances validator management, block production, and state synchronization with Ethereum, marking a major step forward in performance and security.

The Heimdall v2 migration drastically improves transaction finality, cutting the time from 90 seconds to just 5 seconds. It brings greater consensus efficiency and boosts overall security and network performance. Core to the upgrade are important improvement proposals: PIP-62 enables migration from Heimdall v1 to v2 with genesis data imported, PIP-43 upgrades the consensus layer by integrating CometBFT to streamline transaction processing and state synchronization, and PIP-44 refactors Cosmos SDK dependencies to modernize the client architecture.

Following successful deployment on the Amoy Testnet, Polygon plans to launch Heimdall v2 on the mainnet within one to two weeks. This release aligns with Polygon’s ambitious scalability roadmap aimed at transforming on-chain financial transactions globally. By July 2025, Polygon targets processing 1,000 transactions per second (TPS) with 5-second finality and stabilized gas fees.

Looking further ahead, Polygon aims to reach 5,000 TPS and achieve instant finality through the integration of AggLayer technology and one-second block times by October 2025. The ultimate goal is to scale massively to 100,000 TPS, also known as "gigagas," designed to accelerate cross-chain liquidity and support a new era of high-speed, secure, and efficient decentralized finance (DeFi) ecosystems.

The Heimdall v2 upgrade is a critical foundation for this ambitious vision. Built on forks of Cosmos SDK v0.50.13 and CometBFT v0.38.17, it manages validators, orchestrates block production, and synchronizes states between Ethereum and Polygon PoS with optimized throughput and security guarantees. This upgrade positions Polygon PoS as a leading blockchain solution poised to meet the demanding needs of global DeFi and Web3 applications.
