Joseph Chalom, a former digital assets executive at BlackRock, has joined publicly traded Ethereum treasury company SharpLink Gaming as co-CEO, the firm announced on Friday. Chalom played a key role in launching BlackRock’s Bitcoin and Ethereum ETFs and led the firm’s digital asset strategy as managing director and head of strategic ecosystem partnerships.
In a post on X, Chalom stated, “After 20 years at BlackRock and helping to lead its digital asset strategy, I’m beginning a new chapter: I’ve joined SharpLink Gaming as co-CEO.” He emphasized his belief that Ethereum is becoming the foundation of global finance and expressed strong agreement with SharpLink’s vision.
With Chalom’s addition, current SharpLink CEO Rob Phythian will transition to the role of president. SharpLink Chairman and Consensys CEO Joseph Lubin praised Chalom’s impact on institutional adoption of digital assets, calling his decision to join SharpLink a powerful endorsement of the company’s Ethereum treasury strategy.
SharpLink aims to add shareholder value long-term by utilizing Ethereum as a productive asset through staking, restaking, and other yield-bearing strategies. The company holds over 360,000 ETH valued at more than $1.3 billion and recently acquired nearly 80,000 ETH in a week to grow its treasury.
The firm outlined plans to raise up to $6 billion via a stock sale to fund additional ETH purchases. Chalom described their mission as “building a bridge between institutional capital and Ethereum-native yield, packaged in a single public equity,” with the asset being ETH and the ticker SBET.
Shares of SharpLink Gaming declined more than 6% today to $21.89, extending losses to over 31% in the past five trading days according to Google Finance.
